Well, I guess that was short-lived at least as far as my posting about chicken was concerned.
Apparently by next month, our local chicken will now be Draper Valley Holdings, LLC since it was acquired by Booth Creek Management Corp. See GoSkagit for the story.
Booth Creek and HM Capital Partners acquired a majority interest in September 2002 in Swift & Company which is now the second largest processor of beef and pork in the world. Wait, I take that back. Swift was acquired by JBS S.A. on July 12th and is the largest processor. Oh, who can keep track. Either way, you may recall that Swift was raided in December 2006 and about 1,200 illegal workers were rounded up at various processing plants.
So Draper Valley won’t really be a fiscally local chicken anymore. The chickens themselves and the jobs, at least for the time being, will remain in the valley as before.
